Visitor Submitted Question # 1 – Do You Feel MLB Should Test Everyone For Performance Enhancing Drugs?
-
Hello All,
We have been receiving A LOT of interesting visitor inquiries as of late, and many of the questions (5 to be exact) have been on this very topic (or close to it).
So I will give my opinion to those who asked:
- Jim (Illinois)
- Gina (Chicago)
- Jason (New York)
- Bill (Connecticut)
- Susan (Washington DC)* This post has drawn even more emails since it was posted (5 to be exact) and I will post some of that here as well! *
Ok, so the question went something like this: “Do You Feel MLB Should be testing EVERYONE in order to preserve the sanctity of the game from this point forward?”
First, I want to also say the floor is open to ALL visitors to give your opinion here as well.
I truly feel that this would be a wonderful first step for the MLB to take. I understand the players unions has some say in this, but let’s face it, if you throw away the random aspect of testing it will certainly make players think twice about these performance enhancers.
The only thing that should be random about this testing is the dates, EVERYONE should be tested, and EVERYONE should be unaware as to when. Let’s let the truth come out, if no one is taking them anymore than why should the have any issue with this? If everyone is so squeeky clean, then why should the union even have an issue…Let’s get real here, there are still a great deal of offenders in baseball..and I dread the day that list gets released…
So in conclusion, I feel YES they should test EVERYONE. If this rule started today, barring any undetectable substances, it would restore some purity to this wonderful sport we love so much. It would mark 2009 as the true re-initiation of official non tainted record keeping.
I want to open the floor to the other authors here to make some comments and critique what I have said here…also, visitors let me know your thoughts.
You're a MLB Pro..Thanks For Coming Back!

This is really stupid. This would never happen. The union wouldn’t allow it.

I actually agree with this. There really is no reason for people to hide if they are innocent. Maybe it would be a better idea to allow a player volunteer process.

Dugg. I just wrote something similar and submitted it to a local Newspaper. Cool Stuff.

Drug testing across the board is a great idea. The reality today is that performance enhancers are out there, and we need to adjust the standards currently in place accordingly to stop the trend before it worsens.
Consider the way international federation does this for swimming — members of national teams can be tested on any day, in any location, at any hour of the day. The swimmers apprise the testers of their whereabouts constantly, whether it be going to class, to practice, to the movies or while traveling. They have no idea when testers might show up, and the screening is completely random, both at meets and at home. The results of those who are caught are then posted on the FINA web site for all to see.
It’s time to start holding these professional athletes, especially baseball players, accountable. They are grown men and should know better than to play the naivete card. In fact, that should never be an excuse, but our society is all too willing to forgive young people for poor choices. Baseball, although tainted because of recent scandal, needs to turn it around and regain the trust of its fanbase and its own community of athletes.

My thoughts exactly. Everyone seems to fancy themselves as a professionals, and even role models in some cases..It would be appropriate for them to step up to the plate and voluntarily get themselves put on a “Testing White List” Meaning “Hey I’ll accept testing ANY TIME”
I only hope that baseball listens to the fans and assist in purifying this wonderful game.

I support it, but I am not sure how the players union will go about this. Testing in all players will clean the game up. How will they do this if only some players are tested. There would still be some lucky steroid abusers out there that weren’t caught.
Also, this would allow for us to be sure of the best role models in the game, people who you can count on for kids to look up to. Look at what happened with A-Rod. Kids looked up to him, and even though he apoligized, there will be an asterisk on everything he does now. This will separate the truly good players in the game.
I support it.

Excellent point. With this model of attacking the problem, we let those who KNOW they wont get caught volunteer to be tested.
Those who dont volunteer…will be suspect for sure…
Perhaps we can get a serious petition together to propose these concepts…
Who’s with me?

I would 100% seriously be willing to participate in that kind of petition. Are you serious? If so post it here and I will sign it.

Performance enhancing drugs are awesome. Hit the ball further and more frequently? Who doesn’t want to see that. In fact, maybe it’s time to level the playing field. Let’s give all the players in MLB some drugs.
It’s time to see baseball scores that look more like basketball scores.
February 28, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Haha. What? yeah if they keep it up the scores will be closer to football stores. It will take another generation of steroid users to reach BAsketball status!
