Pujols hits two jacks, Lohse has strong day as Cards sweep Mets and win 12-8

  • Get the brooms out, Jeff! St. Louis defeated the Mets 12-8 today, sweeping all three games in the series. Albert Pujols hit two home runs (in the 1st and 5th, both off of Mets starter Livan Hernandez). Rick Ankiel also hit his first of the season (also off Hernandez) in the 5th.

Kyle Lohse had yet another strong outing, going 5 innings and allowing 8 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), a walk and a strikeout. St. Louis’ only bad reliever was rookie PJ Walters, who went 2 1/3, allowing 6 runs on 5 hits (including home runs to Ryan Church and Carlos Beltran).

The Cards are now 11-5 (having won three straight) and lead the NL Central by 1 1/2 games, while the Mets fall to 6-9 (losing four straight) and are fourth in the NL East.

Lohse only pitched 5 innings because he twisted his knee awkwardly trying to field a ball. He is going to have an MRI on the knee.
