Cards lose season opener to Pirates, 6-4
-
It seemed that the Cardinals had everything under control going into the 9th inning. Ryan Ludwick broke up a 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the 8th, and David Freese added a run in the same inning. In came new closer Jason Motte, who had an 0.82 ERA in 11 innings last season.
After walking a man to load the bases, Motte had an 0-2 count on Pirates SS Jack Wilson. Just then, the MLB.TV feed cut, and I missed what I was hoping didn’t happen. Turns out Wilson doubled, clearing the bases.
Hopefully this isn’t a sign of 2008 happening all over again for St. Louis (since the Cards had 31 blown saves last season). The Pirates have just repeated what they did all of last year to the team – win when it matters most. I will give Pittsburgh credit for that, but it still stinks losing to a lowly team like them. There’s still 161 games to go, but games like this could be a sign for a season to come.
Despite the bad things that happened today, I agree with the shirt below.
