Cards-Cubs series finale rained out, Barton traded
-
Last night’s rainout in the Cards-Cubs finale was probably a good thing. Given that the team had 20 games in 21 days, the rainout gave the team an extra day of rest. It was probably a good thing because the majority of the bullpen got used the night before, and there was no pressure on starter Todd Wellemeyer to go more than 6 innings (regardless of how he played).
I saw that the Cardinals traded outfielder Brian Barton to the Braves for righty reliever Blaine Boyer. It’s a good thing in my mind, because Barton had little chance to play for the Birds, thanks to the surplus of outfielders that the team has. Really, I think the front office pulled this trade in desperation after seeing the bullpen’s latest struggles. I’m not sure how much playing time Boyer will get with the Big Birds (or when), but he could be of use before long. Welcome aboard, Blaine.
The Cards are back in St. Lou tomorrow, as Wellemeyer will now start against Oliver Perez and the Mets.
